Mahindra History

Mahindra & Mahindra started in 1948 when brothers K.C. Mahindra and J.C. Mahindra saw an opportunity to take their previous steel trading company and expand into manufacturing and selling larger MUVs, starting with an assembly under license to produce the Willys Jeep in India. As an established Jeep manufacturer in India, Mahindra began making light commercial vehicles and tractors.

The Mahindra B-275 was the first tractor produced by the company back in 1963. By 2010, Mahindra Tractors were the world’s high-selling brand by volume. They’ve been the market leader in India (the largest tractor market in the world) since 1983 and entered the American market in 1994 as Mahindra USA, choosing to partner with NASCAR and McDonalds to cement their reputation. With assembly plants in Texas, California, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, and Kansas, they’ve become a countrywide force in agricultural manufacturing, and their biggest development team is located in the U.S.

In recent years Mahindra has entered new industries and markets. They took over Kinetic Motors to start producing two-wheelers, and they also bought a controlling stake in REVA Electric Car Company in 2010 as well as the South Korean SsangYong Motor Company in 2011. Acquisitions continued as Mahindra grew its share of existing markets and improved manufacturing output and efficiency.
