Review Your Owner’s Manual
First things first, you need to review your Mahindra Retriever owner’s manual. Each new model year comes with slightly different needs, and the one place you’re going to find a detailed outline of how to care for your model. If you can’t find your manual, head to the Mahindra website to download or request a copy.
Protecting the Battery
Checking your battery’s charge can help prolong its life. Keep it charged so your engine can run properly and clean the posts if you start to notice corrosion. If you’re currently not using your UTV, and don’t intend to before the warm months, you’ll want to remove the battery and hook it up to a trickle charge in a temperature-controlled area. This way, you’ll still be able to use it when you’re ready to ride again.
Tire Pressure Checks
Your tires are an essential part of staying safe and efficient, which is why they need their own inspection. Check the psi levels to ensure they’re still up to par with what you need, especially when temperatures start to dip. Keep in mind, the recommended levels can change depending on what you’re doing, so keep your owner’s manual close for this.
While you’re checking pressure levels, take a moment to inspect the tread of the tire. Signs of excessive wear or damage could indicate that one of the tires needs replacing.
If your Mahindra Retriever is in storage, then set aside time to move your machine half a tire rotation to relieve pressure from one spot and prevent damage or reduced pressure levels. Alternatively, you can lift the entire side-by-side off the ground to entirely relieve your tires of the extra work.
Oil
Just like your car, you’ll need to check your engine oil regularly. Top off as needed. If you see that the fluid is dark and sludgy, then you’ll want to replace it. If you notice metal shavings, you’ll want to get your UTV checked by a professional. This could be a sign that there are parts grinding together that shouldn’t be.
Change the Filters
You’ll also want to change all necessary filters regularly, in order to ensure the cleanest and most efficient performance. This can include the oil filter, air filter, and fuel filter. Some of these will need to be replaced more than others, but checking them regularly should be on your maintenance list.
Spark Plugs
The only way you’re getting the power from the battery into the engine itself is with a good, working pair of spark plugs. This is going to take a little more work, but if you enjoy getting your hands dirty, then invest in a spark plug wrench so you have a way to take them out once you’ve disconnected the battery and removed the engine cover. Inspect them for signs of damage and to make sure they’re clean and dry. If you aren’t confident, then you might want to leave this to the professionals.
Fuel
Of course, you’ll want to fill up before every ride, but you’ll want to fill up with the right fuel. You’ll probably want to look into high-octane fuel for the best performance. Ethanol-enriched fuels can lead to increased corrosion and buildup in the engine. If your Mahindra Retriever is in storage right now, make sure there’s fuel stabilizer in the tank to keep the fuel from going bad.
Brakes
Even if your brakes aren’t displaying signs of failure, if they’re not working properly, it can greatly impact efficiency. At the very least, a proper inspection can prevent a small problem from getting bigger. Check brake pad thickness, line routing, and braking fluid condition and levels, to ensure the system is properly running.
When your Mahindra Retriever is working properly, you can make the most of the performance it has to offer. This also means taking it in for professional inspections.
